Our legal obligations
Under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, all territorial authorities (councils) are legally required to:
- promote effective and efficient forms of waste management and minimisation
- adopt a Waste Management and Minimisation Plan that includes objectives and policies for achieving effective and efficient forms of minimising waste.
In 2011 the councils within the Wellington Region worked together to develop our first shared Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. We've recently reviewed this plan and carried out a waste assessment for the Wellington region. This review, along with the waste assessment, has informed the development of a new Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP).
What was found in the waste assessment
Based on our 2016 waste assessment, we know that we can all improve on our waste management and minimisation performance. The waste assessment has highlighted that:
- we are throwing out an increasing amount of waste, which ends up in our landfills
- compared to other councils around New Zealand, the quantity of recycling collected in the Wellington Region is relatively low.
As a region, we have the ability to:
- reduce the amount of waste we produce
- more effectively reuse our waste resources for other purposes
- recycle more.
The new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan sets out the possible means through which we could achieve this.
